Can anyone recommend a good book for me to read?

I am a civil engineering major so I do not have a lot of time to read, but now I have an internship and time to read. I have read the following books: the giver, angels & demons, going postal, the kite runner, the color of water, the life of pi, American gods, angela's ashes, and so forth. I am looking for a good sci five, adventure, or fantasy. Something that will take me away. I dislike dime novels of the james Patterson type, or m marketed paperback. I also dislike ( please don't flame me for saying this) kurt Vonnegut's work. Please help me out I am tired of looking through a synopsis, reading a little, then finding out that the book is not holding my interest. Thanks in advance.
